FINDAGRAVE MEMORIAL ID 24954456

My maternal 1st great grandmother, daughter of Henry August Clausen and Mary Kobel (some records show her mother as Mary Leuche) Surname also spelled Clausson, Classon, Clasen, Classen, Claussan, and Klassen.

Emigrated in 1855 from Germany to Illinois.

I was so excited to find Emma in the 1870 Census for Illinois, so now after 25 yrs. of searching I know who her parents and siblings were. Emma was my maternal great grandmother.

Emma was the sister of: (6) August, Frederick Henry, Minnie "Mina" (Kasten), Caroline "Carrie" (Neumann), Louisa (Olson) Clausen,  and Annie Clausen (Rasmussen) .

Emma Elsie (Clausen) Palen, beloved first wife of Frank Joseph Palen, married 21 June 1889 in LaCrosse, LaCrosse, Wisconsin, USA.

Mother of Phyllis Eugenia Adele (Palen) Linderman, my maternal grandmother. I never knew my Great Grandmother, Emma because she died before I was born.

My Mother was Jean Marie (Linderman) Frederick Mancill, and she told me that her grandmother, Emma was Lutheran, but Frank was Catholic. And...that poor Emma had to attend her church alone, because she had promised to raise their children as Catholic.

My Grandmother wasn't allowed to attend church with her Mother, and she was forced to attend Catholic schools until she was in High School, when she talked her father into letting her go to public schools. He never forgave himself for it, because she married a Lutheran not a Catholic. Phylis changed spelling of her name to Phyllis.

Through research, thanks to LeRoy Amacher, I found out that Frank and Emma were both buried in the Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, beside each other. In the past, no one but a Catholic could be buried in a Catholic cemetery.

Emma was a good, loving, and kind woman. She was a homemaker.
Emma and Frank had four children: (4)
Leo, Phylis, Hedwig, and Flossie Palen. Hedwig and Flossie died very young.
They have many, many descendants. They would be proud. I am proud to be descended from such an honorable family.

One of their daughters, my Grandmother, Phyllis Eugenia Adele (Palen) Linderman, and Harry William "Billy" Linderman, had four daughters: (4)
Yvonne (Burgess) (Levesque), Yvarra "Billie" Irene (Jackson), Jean Marie (Frederick) (Mancill), and Patricia Mae "Patsy" (Cooke), and no sons.

Dear Ancestor,

Your tombstone stands among the rest:
Neglected and alone,

The name and date are chiseled out -
on polished, marbled stone.

It reaches out to all who care,
It is too late to mourn -

You did not know that I exist,
You died and I was born.

Yet, each of us are cells of you:
In flesh, in blood, in bone.

Our blood contracts and beats a pulse -
entirely not our own.

Dear ancestor, the place you filled,
a hundred years ago -

Spreads out among the ones you left,
Who would have loved you so.

I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew -

That someday I would find the spot;
And come and visit you?
